Abstract
The
edited volume reviews the special relationship of global and regional forces
in reshaping eleven cities in their different political and cultural contexts.
The common theme is a changing socio-political environment in recent times.
The local manifestation of global processes largely depends on locally-driven
forces of response to challenges from outside. Among these challenges are
globalisation processes und changes specifically related to the geographical
context of the individual cities.
The
chapter on Hong Kong analyses the consequences of the former British colony's
handover to China and parallel global city formation. It explains the different
aspects of this two-fold transformation, related spatial changes, and implications
for urban planning. Massive investment in the city's infrastructure and
socio-cultural adaptation are among the successful strategies for Hong
Kong to face challenges brought upon it by external forces.

kiuj lastatempe spertis profundajn eksternajn ŝanĝiĝoj n.
