The Skyrong

The skyrong (spoken: skürong (ü like in german "über" or like
in "Zürich". It's not an english term.) is a new garment for
all men and women. It's somewhat between a wrap-skirt and a
sarong and resembles a cloth, that is reaching from the waist
to the ankles and a girdle, that is reaching about 2½ times
around the waist. The material, the colors the pattern takes
only a little part. (See link).

The possibilities for using a skyrong are nearly infinite.
For examples: as a skirt with slits / slashes in front, as a
wrap-skirt, as a bath towel, as  a short cape, as a sarong,
as an emergency dressing, as an overskirt, as a mini-
skirt (!), as a kneelong skirt, as a variable skirt and so
one. It can serve as a theft protection (!) also, by wearing
as a overskirt over the pants or the skirt, in that you had
putted your purse or your wallet.

A skyrong would be used at best with wide shorts, But there
are other garments for using with a skyrong.

How to make a skyrong:

That the needings: sewing machine, pins, clothing pencil,
tape measure, some fabrics depend on the measures below.

1. First determine the measures A, B und C (Pic. 1):

measure A: the length from the waist to the ankle
measure B: the girth of the waist, when taking a deep
        breath.
measure C: the girth of the hip

2. Select the width of the girdle:
Select a width of the girdle between 1,5 cm and 5 cm or
     as you like.
     This is measure D

3. Select the overlap-factor:
Here you choice, how far the skyrong should overlap.
     (Like a wrap-skirt.)

     Select the overlap-factor, for that
purpose is there the indication of hip-measure C.
Good factors are between 1,5 and 1,75.

     This is factor E.

4. Determine the scope for the girdle in the skyrong:

The width of the girdle (measure D) + 1 to 2 cm
(possible more) + width of hem (1 to 2 cm) result
in meassure F (scope for the girdle in the skyrong)

5. Then modify the measures:
     measure C x faktor E + 2 to 4 cm (2 x 1 to 2 cm hem)
result in measures G (width of the skyrongs with hem)

     measure A + (2 x 1 to 2 cm hem) + measure F
     result in measure H
measure G is the length of the skyrongs before
     manufacturing  (Pic. 2)
measure H is the width of the skyrongs before
     manufacturing   (Pic. 2)

6. Should the girdle be maded from the same fabric, then you
     need following measures:
measure I: 2½ times of measures B (girth of waist)
     (=length of girdle)
measure K: 4x measure D (width of girdle)
The measure I must be halved (tripled),
     this result in measure L.
The measure K must be doubled (sometime tripled),
because the girdle is maded from two (three) stripes.
This result in measure M (Pic. 3)

Alternatvely the girdle can me maked with other materials,
but there shound not be used to rough materials like some
ropes and cords, else the fabric can be weared through.

7. On a sheet of paper or with the pc you should draw aright-
angle on a scale of 1:10 with the measure G as length and
measure H as width. Beneath it, make the same with the
girdle and the measure L and measure M. In the same way
you should draw a line with a length of the width
   of the fabric.

One problem, that can occur:
Width of fabric have a fixed width, there can be that the
skyrong must be maded from 2 width of fabrics. Because
this, you should first go to the shop for examining the
width of fabrics that are sold there.

8. Now have a look, which of the 4 measures G, H, L, M is
larger than the width of the fabric.
If is only one of the measures G und H greater than the
width of the fabric, then make that nothing. That measure,
that is smaller than the width of the fabric
   is now measure W.

Is the measure W at most 10 cm smaller than the width
of the fabric X then set measures W to measures X.

The measure in the the length of the fabric is now the
   measure Y.

Should both measures be greater than the the width of the
fabric, there are some possibilities for that:

   a) Take measures H as the width of the fabric
      (Skyrong would be shorter.)

   b) Sewing two fabrics at both sides together, you must
get a tube by doing so, then cut through the middle
      of one of the fabrics.

   c) Make girdle from separate materials, but the measures
      D, F and H can change.

The measures M is normaly never greater than the width of
the fabric (since it is not longer than 25 cm at most.)
Is the measure L larger than the width of the fabric, then
set the measure L to the width of the fabric.

Reach this now not 2¼-times around the waist, but more than
2-times, thes can be something maked with buttons.

Reach this not again, then the must the girdle be
   maded from 3 stripes.

But the measure M is now about measure K longer
   (meet now 3-times measure K).

9. Perhaps, when the girdle is maked from the same material as
the skyrong, then must be added the measure M to
   the measure Y.

This result in the finale measure Y.

Here is a list of all measures.

Measure Description Formula
A Length waist to ankles (none)
B girth of waist, when taking a deep breath (none)
C girth of hip (none)
D width of girdle (select self, idealy would be 1,5 to 5 cm )
E overlap-factor (select self; should be between 1,5 und 1,75)
F scope for girdle D + 1 to 2 cm (perhaps greater) + width of seam (1 to 2 cm)
G width of the skyrong with hem before manufacturing C x E + 2 to 4 cm
H Length of the skyrong with hem before manufacturing A + 2 cm + F (see point 5)
I Length of girdle before manufacturing B x about 2½; perhaps. 2 x X or 3 x X (see point 5)
K Length of girdle before manufacturing D x 4
L A half of the length of girdle before manufacturing I / 2 (at most = X)
M 2 x or 3 x width of girdle before manufacturing K x 2 or K x 3 (see point 5)
W Measures G or H, who not exceed the width of fabrics X G or H (set to X, if X - G or
X - H < 10 cm)
X Width of fabrics fixed (= the width of the fabric)
Y Length of fabrics (G or H) + (M or 3 x K)
(as the case may be)

10. Buy fabrics with measure X as the width of the fabric
and measures Y the length of the fabric.

Step 11-15 only if girdle would be maded from the same
    fabrics or other fabrics.

11. Perhaps draw the strips of the girdle on the fabrics,
then cut it away (only if the material for the girdle
is included in the buyed fabric.)

12. Sew the strips with the ends together (about 1 cm
from the ends away), but let two ends free (Pic. 4).

13. Hem the ends of the stripes with 1 cm border (Pic. 4).

14. First fold the girdle at both outer broken lines,
then sew it together (Pic. 4)

15. Fold the girdle at the middle broken line again and sew
it together. Now the girdle is finished.

16. Hem the mainpart of the skyrong with 1 cm.

17. Measure the length F from the length H (Pic. 5) and
    draw this on the mainpart.

18. Fold the measured length F with the hem inside around
the drawed line, align it out then pin it down.

19. Sew on the seam, along this hem the fabrics together.

20. Pull the girdle with help of a wire (pend the end of the
wire) in that under point 19 created loop.
    Now the skyrong is finished!
