MITHRAS - Kult und Verehrung

Obwohl der Mithras-Kult weit älter ist als das Christentum, so fällt doch seine 'Blütezeit' mit dessen Frühzeit im 1., 2. und 3. Jahrhundert nC zusammen.

Über den Kult, seine Entstehung, seinen Untergang, die Bauten, Inschriften etc. gibt es gute Fachliteratur, wenn auch nicht sehr vieles. Das liegt zur Hauptsache daran, dass bis jetzt relativ wenig bekannt ist, denn der Mithraskult war ein ausgesprochener Geheimkult.

MITHRAS - cult and worship

Even though the Mithras-cult is much older than Christianity iths 'high-time' is about the same time as the beginning of Christianity in the 1st, 2nd and 3rd century AD.

There is some good literature - even though not very much - available about the cult, its origins and its endings as much as about buildings, inscriptions and objects. The reason for the lack of knowledge is the fact that Mathraism was strictly a secret cult with no outgoing information to non-believers.

Auch die Neu-Mithräer halten sich strikt an die Geheimhaltung.

Also today's New-Mathraeans keep themselves to the oath of silence.

Als allgemeine Information hier die sieben Grade innerhalb der Gemeinde:

1. 'Corvus' (Rabe) = Merkur; Symbole: Merkurstab, eine Tasse, Rabe

2. 'Gryphus' (Bräutigam) = Venus; Symbole: Brautdiadem, Ehering, Lampen

3. 'Miles' (Soldat/Kämpfer) = Mars; Symbole: Lanze, Helm und Geldbeutel

4. 'Leo' (Löwe) = Jupiter; Symbole: Blitzbündel, Sistra und Steuerruder

5. 'Perses' (Perser/Abstammender) = Mond; Symbole: Pflug, persisches Schwert, Mond und Stern

6. 'Solus' (Sonnenläufer) = Sonne; Symbole: Strahlenkranz, Peitsche und Fackel

7. 'Pater' (Vater/Papst) = Saturn; Symbole: phrygische Mütze, Sichel und Stab

Die Grade 1, 2 und 3 gehören zur unteren Stufe, die Grade 4, 5 und 6 zur oberen mit erhöhter Geheimhaltung der Mysterien, und die Leitung der verschiednen Regionalgemeinden untersteht den 'Vätern'.

For some general information here the seven grades withing the community:

1. 'Corvus' (Raven) = Mercury; symbols: staff of mercury, a cup and a raven

2. 'Gryphus' (Bridegroom) = Venus; symbols: bridal wreath, ring and lamps

3. 'Miles' (Solder/Fighter) = Mars; symbols: lance, helmet and wallet

4. 'Leo' (Lion) = Jupiter; symbols: bundle of flashs, sistra and steering rudder

5. 'Perses' (Persian/Descendent) = Moon; symbols: plough, Persian sword, moon and a star

6. 'Solus' (Courier of the Sun) = Sun; symbols: halo, whip and torch

7. 'Pater' (Father/Pope) = Saturn; symbols: phrygian cap, sickle and staff

The grades 1, 2 und 3 form the lower step, 4, 5 and 6 the higher one with even stricter demands to secrecy about the mysteries, and the different regional communities are led by the 'Fathers'.

Wie wird man Gefolgsmann des Mithras? - Man muss männlich sein (wie der Papst) und dies bei der Aufnahme öffentlich beweisen, die nach einer Unterrichtungszeit stattfand.

Danach darf der 'Rabe' - herbeigeflogen zum Futternapf des Wissens - an Gottesdiensten und dem Kultmahl mit Wein und Brot teilnehmen, ähnlich, wie es die Christen als 'Abendmahl' feiern. Zu diesem Kultmahl bringt er seinen persönlichen Becher - deshalb der Becher als Symbol des 'Corvus'.

How to become a follower of Mithras? - One had to be male (like the Pope) and be able to prove that publically at the occasion of initiation after a period of religious education.

After that he is permitted to participate at services and the cultic meal with bread and wine, wich the Christians celebrate in a similar manner as the Lord's Supper. To this cultic meal he brings his personal cup - therefore the symbol of the cup for the 'corvus'.

Für den Aufstieg in die nächsthöhere Weihestufe lässt sich der Rabe in die entsprechenden Mysterien einweisen und legt eine Wissensprüfung ab. Er ist jetzt eine Art 'Braut' des Mithras und es ist ihm erlaubt, einen 'Verlobungsring' zu tragen. Das Symbol der Lampe deutet auf die Stufe der 'Erleuchtung'.

For the rise of the raven to the next higher grade he needs to be educated to the corresponding mysteries and then has to pass a test of knowledge. He is now sort of a 'bride' of the god Mithras and is allowed to carry a ring of engagement. The symbol of a lamp represents the grade of enlightening.

Die dritte Einweisung und die entsprechende Prüfung über Standfestigkeit und Glaubenstreue führen zum 'Kämpfer für Mithras', den 'Miles', der letzten Stufe der unteren Mitglieder. Die darüber hinausgehenden Grade sind streng geheim und können hier nicht behandelt werden.

The third grade is reached after still more education and a hard test about knowledge, firmness and faithfulness and leads to a 'Fighter for Mithras', the 'miles', the last grade of the lower step. The still higher grades are strictly secret and cannot be explaines here.

Wie wunderbar ist doch das Wissen im Herzen der Gottheit, das urewig jedes Geschöpf hat erschaut.

Drei Flügel hast du: in die Höhe empor schwingt der eine, auf der Erde müht sich der zweite, und überall schwingt der Dritte.

O Urkraft der Ewigkeit, in deinem Herzen ordnest du alles, erschaffen ist alles durch dein Wort, wie du es gewollt.

Das Gemeinte soll dabei gelten!

O grosser Vater, wir sind in grosser Not! Nun flehen wir zu dir, wir flehen durch dein Wort , durch das du unsern Mangel überreich gestillt.

O ewiger Gott, nun neige dich, in jener Liebe glühe auf, die uns zu Gliedern macht. Schau auf die Not, die uns befällt, und führ uns in die Freude unseres Heils. Du hast uns gerettet durch das Vergiessen des ewigen Blutes.

Sei nun geneigt, wie es dir entspricht, blicke helfend auf uns hin, damit wir nicht vergehen und dunkel in uns sei dein Name. Hilf uns um deines Namens willen!

An imaginary prayer to Mithras

Almighty God Belenus Mithras Perseus, invincible sun, born from virgin rock, creator of light, ruler of all und sovereign over everything. May you be gloryfied.

How wonderful is the knowledge in the heart of the god, which for all times has seen all creatures.

Three wings you have: one swings into loftiness, on earth endeavours the second, and everywhere sways the third.

O power of eternity, in your heart you put everything in order that is created by your word, as you have wanted it.

And that what is meant shall here be valid!

O great father, we are in urgent need! Now we pray to you, we implore you through your word, through which you over richly uppease our distress.

O eternal god, now incline to us, in love glow up to us, the love that makes us to your followers. Look down upon our necessity which befalls us, and guide us into the joy of our salvation. You have saved us through sheding the eternal blood.

Do tend yourself towards us, as it seems adequate to you, look helpingly down upon us, so that we shall not vanish and there be no darkness within uns about your name. Help us for the sake of your name!

Not more I ask from you.

O power of wisdom, circling the tracks in space, the one of life, you, drawing the circles in eternity, hugging everything.

O happy soul, you are victorious on the pilgrim's path in this worls, victorious over your mortal body.

From the divine spirit, which made you to its mirror, you were crowned for that.
