| Rom ist für mich der
Inbegriff von "Stadt" - und dies umfasst nicht nur Menschen verschiedenster Art,
Bauten aller Art, durchzogen von Verkehrswegen, sondern dies beinhaltet auch nicht
messbare Begriffe wie "Geschichte" oder "Ambiente". Eine weitere Stadt von ähnlicher Ausstrahlung ist für mich Jerusalem, wenn auch ganz anders, war doch diese Stadt nie Zentrum eines Weltreiches gewesen. Und als drittes beispiel möchte ich New York nenne, wenn dort auch (noch) der historische Hintergrund fehlt. |
Rome to me is the substance
of what the term "city" or "town" can mean - not only the sum of its
inhabitants, the buildings, the streets and squares, but it also includes unmeasurable
facts such as "history" or "ambiente". One other city I esteem almost equally high is Jerusalem, however different from Rome it is, and politically it never played the Role Rome did, and the third such city to me is new York where, however, the historical aspect is (still) lacking. |

Die dazwischenliegende sumpfige Niederung entwickelte sich zum gemeinsamen Marktplatz und zum politischen Zentrum, dem späteren Forum Romanum. | Rome, traditionally founded 753 BC, started as an accumulation of shepard's settlements on some hills in the vicinity of the river Tiber. The rather swampy lowlands between the hills became sort of a commun market and assembly place - the later Forum Romanum. |
