The boys' father

You go to see the boys' father. He comes to the door dressed in a grubby vest and trousers with holes in them, has a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, and smells strongly of alcohol. He has an unkempt beard and looks like he hasn't had a wash for a week, but above all he is very large - about seven feet tall, with shoulders to match.

You explain to him that his boys have been stealing your apples. However, he tells you in no uncertain terms that he cannot believe his boys would do anything of the kind. What's more, he gets very angry that anyone - and you in particular - could ever suggest that his boys would steal apples or anything else. He threatens you with violence if you ever repeat your accusations again. You leave hurriedly before he starts putting his words into practice.
