You buy an electric fence from a salesman who assures you that it is an effective deterrent, but not really dangerous at all. You put the fence around the tree to keep the boys away. You switch on the electric current and then go out for the evening. You return quite late and go straight to bed without checking whether anything has happened in the garden.
In the morning, however, you go out into the garden to see if there are any signs that the boys came the night before. There are indeed signs of the boys - two dead bodies lying by the electric fence. The salesman lied to you: the fence is a death trap. Now you are really in trouble.
The boy who survived tells the police everything. You are arrested and put on trial for murder. The tabloid press runs banner headlines describing you as a monster thirsting for the blood of small children, and you receive around twenty hate letters a day from people threatening to do all kinds of gruesome things to you once they get the opportunity. As a number of these letters are written from the prisons you will probably be sent to, you know very well that they will soon have their opportunity. Your only options are to commit suicide or start again ...
