The 1998 METW Championship - the ring deck proves decisive
The fighting was hard and the nerves were raw, but in the end the last player to
enter the championship sailed past all the others in great speed. Whereas for a
long time the championship looked set for Peter Buchs, high speed and
ring-destruction led the way for Roland Fuchs to overcome all odds. The four
participants, being of different tempers, made use of highly different strategies.
Peter Buchs and Hansjörg Künzler are of the more epic kind. They seem to be more
interested in achieving some long-winded quests than sweeping the opponent off
the table. Games between the two tend to last for hours. Roland Fuchs and
Patrick Näf, on the contrary, are straight to the point. Grab the necessary
marshalling points and the victory is yours. Roland Fuchs' excellence in the
ring-destruction strategy proved decisive in the end. He succeeded in no less
than two of the three times he went for the One Ring. A strategy to counter his
has still to be found.

The 1998 METW Championship Rules
Below you find the rules according to which the 1998 METW Championship was played.
- Every player plays 2 games against each other player. The championship
takes place between January 1st and September 30th 1998.
- In principle, the standard rules are used as they are given in
Middle-earth: the Wizards Companion. There is one exception, though.
In the 1998 METW Championship site path movement may not be used. The
basic game form used in the 1998 METW Championship is the 2-deck game.
If, however, the two players involved agree, special game versions can
be chosen instead, i.e. 1-deck game, 3-deck game, Mount Doom winning
option only, no early Free Council possible or additional rules from the
Council of LŪrien.
- In principle only cards from Middle-earth: the Wizards (incl. promo cards)
may be used. If, however, the two players involved agree, cards from
Middle-earth: the Dragons and/or Middle-earth: Dark Minions may be used,
too.
- The 1998 METW championship is won by the player who has acquired the
biggest amount of winning points (WPs). If there are two players with the
same amount of WPs, the difference between the marshalling points (MPs)
won and conceded is used to determine the winner. If the two players have
the same MP difference, the two games between the two players are used
instead.
- The winner of a game receives 2 WPs, the loser none. If there is a draw,
both players receive 1 WP each. If a player wins the game by destroying
the One Ring, he will receive two additional WPs. If he, however, wins
because his opponent gets his wizard killed, the winner will get but 1 WP
(the same amount as if there had been a draw). The MPs acquired in the
game will also be recorded. If a player wins by destroying the One Ring,
he will get 10 additional MPs (added to the amount of points gathered
before the destruction of the ring).
- A game report with the signatures of both players has to be sent to the
championship administrator, Peter
Buchs, in order to get the result of the match registered for the
championship. The games are arranged individually between the players
involved.
- There may be no additional participants for the present championship. New
players may, however, register for the 1999 METW Championship up to
December 15th 1998. The abovementioned rules are valid for the 1998 METW
Championship. Should they prove unsatisfactory, they may undergo changes
for the 1999 METW Championship.
The 1999 METW Championship - Can the One Ring deck be overcome?
This year it will be seen if Roland Fuchs' One Ring deck is invincible. Or
perhaps he'll find some new stratagem to fool all other participants. The
participants will discuss the rule changes for the 1999 METW Championship on
their next gaming session on February 13th. If a participant can't make it on
February 13th he can send his proposals to Peter Buchs who will put them forward
to the others. Below you find the rules according to which the 1998 METW
Championship was played.
