Beyond the Merlock Mountains

the Mewlips count their gold
and
we play Middle-earth: the Wizards

Say Friend and enter

do not be afraid as you pass the door to the meeting place of the
Middle-earth: the Wizards Special Interest Group
of the
Swiss Tolkien Society

(if you know a shorter and better name for the group, please let us know)

We are

  • a group of people who love to play Middle-earth: the Wizards and related scenarios.
  • a group of people who collect the cards from Middle-earth: the Wizards and its ever growing number of expansion sets (MECCG).
  • in most cases members of the Swiss Tolkien Society (although you don't need to be a member of the STS to join our network).
  • an autonomous special interest group of the above-mentioned Swiss Tolkien Society.
  • fascinated by the beauty of Tolkien's creation.
  • a group of people who enjoy each other's company and are most open to newcomers.

This Web site serves a dual function. It shall tell those dear newcomers what kind of people we are and what our group can offer to them. In addition it serves as an information forum and service-center for our members. No parts of it are restricted to members only and we hope you can profit from its contents. Please let us know what you think about this site.

For general information on the METW Special Interest Group please contact Peter Buchs via E-mail. In addition you may wish to read the following paragraphs that contain a few details about what we do plus the links to the appropriate sections of our Web site.

What's On

Game sessions at irregular intervals

From time to time we organize one day game sessions at our members' homes where all the members (and also newcomers) are welcome to join in. The games played at these sessions may range from the usual two-person 1-deck-games to various forms of multi-player and multi-deck as well as chosen scenario games. At the very moment we are much too busy with our METW championship, but once we have crowned our champion - approximately in September/October - we'll have another go at these sessions, trying to find out what one can do with those minion agents and with the Lidless Eye set. If you want to find out when there is such a game session please follow the link to the left.

METW Championship

METW championship

Apart from informal game sessions we have introduced a METW championship to which 6 entrants have suscribed this year. Every player has to play two games against each other player which makes a total of 10 games for each player. The basic game form is the 2-deck game played with METW cards only. A 1- or multi-deck game or a specific scenario can also be chosen, though, and METD- or MEDM-cards can be included in the decks, too. This, however, depends on the joint agreement of the two players involved, as we do not want to give too much of an advantage to Mr Suitcase. If you want to know more about the championship rules or see the present standing of the championship follow the link to the left. If you want to find out when we have our next matches turn to the What's On page.

Rules and Cards

Discussion and clarifications of rules and cards

Sometimes people are unsure when a certain rule applies or what a certain card can do. The respective card entries and the handbooks published by Iron Crown Enterprises answer a great deal of these questions, but Middle-earth reality as portrayed in Professor J.R.R. Tolkien's writings must not be neglected either. We will in the future offer our members the opportunity of putting these questions into the open. This will be done partly at our informal meetings, but the same questions will also be treated in the Rules and Cards page of our Web site. So if you have any queries or if you wish to offer your wisdom on certain aspects of MECCG don't hesitate to turn to this page.

Trading consortium

Trading consortium for rare MECCG cards

Some of our members do not only play MECCG, they also collect its cards. To facilitate their search we have formed a trading consortium with a pool of the cards our members are willing to exchange for the cards they are still missing. Those who want to join our trading consortium can contribute the rare cards they're willing to trade away and let us know what rare cards they still need. The trading consortium will then in turn contact our trading partners from foreign Tolkien societies and the Internet. For our current 'trading' and 'wanted' lists turn to the Trading Consortium page. If you want to get more news about our trading consortium, contact its administrator, Peter Buchs.

Card pool of non-rare cards

Buying MECCG cards leaves you with a huge excess of common and uncommon cards. Collectors are, however, only interested in one copy of each card, and players cannot use more than three copies of each non-unique and one of each unique card. Our members have therefore decided to contribute their non-rare excess cards to a card pool from which all members can draw those cards they need further copies of for playing. If you want to get copies from our non-rare card pool, please contact its administrator, Urs Müller (no e-mail as yet!).
