Rules and Cards

The most important sources of knowledge concerning MECCG are the card entries themselves and the handbooks published by Iron Crown Enterprises. We do believe, however, that MECCG also must make sense in the context of J.R.R. Tolkien's works, that it must be true to the literary reality of Middle-earth. Any interpretation of the rules and cards of MECCG must therefore also take Tolkien's creation into consideration.

The following problems have been put before your scrutiny. If you want to voice your opinion on any of the subjects mentioned below or if you have any questions yourselves, don't hesitate to send an e-mail to our co-ordinator.

Queries without answers

Isengard

Q: Isengard is treated as a ruin in METW. This hardly makes sense as Saruman took up his abode there in 2759 Third Age (according to the Tale of Years in the Return of the King) long before Bilbo went on his journey to the Lonely Mountain, i.e. 2941. Isengard should be treated as a border-hold instead (proposition P. Buchs).

Answered queries (partially disputed)

Snowstorm

Q: The card entry says that "each moving company with a wilderness in its site path must return to its site of origin". By the site path do we mean the region types the company is actually moving through (proposition P. Buchs) or do we mean the destination's site path as printed on the card (proposition P. Näf)?

A: Always as it is written on the card: here the actual movement is meant, not the site path printed on the site card. (answer by Erwin Amann)

Storms of OssĪ

Q: The card entry says that "each non-Haven site in play with a Coastal Sea in its site path is tapped". By the site path do we mean the region types the company is actually moving through (proposition P. Buchs) or do we mean the destination's site path as printed on the card (proposition P. Näf)?

A: Here the site path printed on the site card is meant. (answer by Erwin Amann)

Will of Sauron

Q: The card entry says that "all hazard long-events remain in play until this card is discarded". Does this mean that all hazard long-events already in play remain in play while those which are played with Will of Sauron already in play are discarded after one turn (proposition P. Buchs) or does it mean that all hazard long-events remain in play be they already in play when Will of Sauron is played or be they played with Will of Sauron already in play (proposition P. Näf)?

A: All long-events remain in play, independent of the moment they are played. (answer by Erwin Amann)

Arrows Shorn of Ebony / Bow of Dragon-horn

Q: The two card entries say that attacks are modified that are "not keyed to a site". What is meant by "not keyed to a site"? Does it mean:

  • all attacks that are not keyed to a specific site (e.g. Irerock)?
  • all attacks that are not keyed to a specific site (e.g. Irerock) or a site type (e.g. Ruins & Lairs)?
  • all attacks that are not keyed to a specific site (e.g. Irerock), a site type (e.g. Ruins & Lairs) or that is not an automatic-attack?
(question P. Buchs)

A1: The last proposal: everything that is not linked to a site in any way. (answer by Erwin Amann)

A2: One of the first two proposals, but certainly not the last one. There is a short-event - Not at Home - that suggests that automatic-attacks are not counted among the category "attacks keyed to a site". The card entry states that automatic-attacks and attacks keyed to a site by dragons, drakes and trolls are cancelled. Accordingly automatic-attacks would be counted as attacks that are not keyed to a site. (counter-proposal by Peter Buchs)
